Heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) projects involve dealing with cooling, ventilation, and heating systems. HVAC services deal with handling equipment that controls air quality and temperature in residential, institutions, and commercial properties.

However, starting this business can be is being a daunting task. Luckily we have a guide with helpful tips on how you can successfully start an HVAC business. Let’s jump right in.

#1 Certification

Before you start running your HVAC business, we highly recommend that you get certified. HVAC certifications are different from other business licenses and vary from state to state. All technicians handling, buying, or working with refrigerants require EPA 608 certification. In addition to that, technicians with NATE certifications tend to get better jobs and earn more.

Certification gives you credibility and competitive advantage. Therefore, ensure you enroll in a reputable institution that provides certificates based on the HVAC industry. More importantly, you should have the HVAC contractor’s license.

#2 Business Plan

Planning is a crucial step when starting a business. The HVAC business is no different. How will your business be different from others?

Your business plan should be growth-oriented outlining both short term and long term goals. Know your competitors and have a timeline of when you expect to breakeven. Additionally, have an elaborate plan on how to expand your business and profit margins and set working hours. More importantly, research the specific cooling and heating needs of homeowners and commercial establishments in your area of operation.

#3 Specialization

Specialization involves finding a niche that you are perfect in. Do you want to service residential or commercial clients? If you are more skilled in one service, for example, home air conditioning, you should focus your efforts in that area at least for some time.

Also, decide whether you will specialize in products from a specific company. For instance, FLIR's TG130 is a great choice if you need a thermal camera for heating systems. The point is that you should specialize in a specific domain and take training courses in areas you have not mastered yet.

One of the most effective marketing strategies that come in handy if you are on a budget is digital marketing.  Ensure you create business accounts on popular networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook strategies, and Twitter.

The majority of potential customers search for services online before the actual purchase. Social networking is an excellent way to establish a social connecting with potential customers. Email marketing is also an excellent method of marketing.

#5 Partner with other business

From the onset, you should do some research and try to gather companies you can collaborate with, especially in the remodeling and construction industry. Establish a relationship with them and offer solutions for their HVAC needs. Commercial and residential building contractors and renovation project managers are the best lead for long term deals. The main thing is that you should connect with other businesses in your area and find a way to get referrals from them

Conclusion

Starting an HVAC business can be a demanding task, but it does not have to. All you need to do is make a practical plan, do research, promote your business, and partner with other business. Put the tips above into consideration, and you will be glad you did.
