How lasers can improve the efficiency of your automated industrial processes

Improving the efficiency of your automated industrial processes isn’t easy, because it offers diminishing returns the more you try and improve them.

There is only so much you can do to make these processes more efficient because you will be limited by the speed of the tooling or software you are using, the time it takes to create a product or deliver a service, and the budget you have to spend on trying to improve your automated processes.

However, this is not to say you won’t find a solution, only that it will require you to think outside the box and employ an entrepreneurial mindset.

A compelling option could be to use lasers, if their uses fit your requirements.

Lasers can be used for a variety of purposes, from engraving wood and metal, to creating intricate mechanical items that are tricky to create any other way. Copper coils are a great example of a product that is created using a laser’s unerring accuracy and ability to perform intricate tasks.

This is how lasers can improve the efficiency of your automated industrial processes:

Make sure you have the right equipment

If you are thinking of incorporating lasers into your automated industrial processes, then you need to ensure that you have the right equipment. For example, in order to keep your laser system cool, you will need to integrate a TEC controller. These regulate temperature, allowing you to adapt to your environment and the type of laser you are using.

You can use lasers for a variety of purposes

One of the most compelling arguments for incorporating laser technology into your industrial processes is that they can be used for many different purposes.

These purposes include anything from engraving a piece of wood or metal (perhaps for a trophy, plaque or decorative furniture), to soldering and welding, as well as producing incredibly intricate products, such as copper coils and food packaging.

Why are lasers useful?

Lasers can be useful because they are able to complete tasks other types of tooling can’t hope to attempt.

It allows you to produce products (that would otherwise take a long time to create) in a matter of minutes, as well as perform machining tasks that conventional methods cannot match.

This is true of laser welding, for example, which allows you to perform incredibly accurate welding at a minute scale, again and again in an efficient, error-free manner.

Just think how much of a game-changer this could be for your automated industrial processes. It allows you to automate tasks that would usually take hours to complete, hugely speeding up your production line and cutting out human error, too.

Rising productivity would likely filter into other areas of your business as well, encouraging your staff to up their game and think of new ways to expand your company using laser tech.

Closing thoughts

There is no doubt that lasers, when utilized correctly, can perform wonders for your automated processes. There are countless examples of production processes that would simply not be possible without the use of lasers, from punching holes in food packaging to manipulating individual atoms.

While laser technology might not be appropriate for all industrial business models, it is worth considering its potential and deciding whether it could be put to use within your automated processes.
