How AI Is Revolutionizing The Translation Industry

Artificial intelligence (AI) makes translation services far more accurate than ever before, and it provides innovative ways to complete tasks more efficiently. This article discusses how AI is revolutionizing the translation industry.

Why is AI useful for translation?

One of the main advantages of using AI in the translation industry is that it saves time, given it can provide an excellent first translation review of the text. A translation agency that provides language and business solutions globally may use AI to complete the first review of the text, which means they don't have to spend as much time typing themselves. Once AI has completed an initial review, agencies can build upon it.

AI is not yet at a point where it can offer an acceptable level of accuracy on translation. Agencies still must go through documents in fine detail to ensure there aren't mistakes and that the text reads naturally.  Accuracy is crucial in translation services – the slightest error can have devastating repercussions, particularly when it comes to legal documents. Therefore, it can help complete the first review, and then agencies can build upon it themselves.

Humans and AI working together to avoid repetition

There may be a lot of repetition in some translation cases, which may increase for more significant projects. For example, a company like Samsung push out thousands of technological products like laptops, TVs, and a range of home appliances. Due to the speed at which these products are updated, many are fundamental variations of the same device. As a result, there will be a great deal of repetition when creating user manuals and other types of documentation.

In the past, translation agencies have had little choice but to translate the exact text repeatedly in this kind of instance. Alternatively, they can manually duplicate content then go through and make edits or changes to ensure consistency. This can be challenging as the amount of repetition and time spent on projects increases over time.

With AI, translation is automated for this kind of work. Translated content can be automatically inserted where the repetition occurs to reduce the risk of inconsistency. This then means agencies can focus on quality control and avoid the same tasks being repeated.

How AI-Powered Machine Translation Works?

Neural networks are a branch of AI that reflects the behaviour of the human brain. They allow computer programmes to identify patterns and solve common problems in AI and machine learning. This can make translation more accurate.

Neural networks allow AI to analyze original sentences in a process called encoding. Machine learning means AI can translate whole sentences at a time rather than pieces of a sentence. Therefore AI-powered machine translation is more accurate.

Furthermore, AI-powered machine translation means developers don't have to create the same rules and algorithms for earlier systems. New AI systems can teach themselves based on existing data of millions of examples of correct translations.

As we advance, some scientists suggest that AI machines can be trained for translation via unsupervised learning. They learn to process language from pattern recognition without the need for massive amounts of translation examples.

In conclusion, AI is revolutionizing the translation industry. It's helping speed up processes and relieving pressure off agencies. However, it's still not perfect, nor can it match what human translators can do. Despite this, AI technologies in the translation industry are worth developing, considering people's language barriers and how AI can assist.
