Common Cyber Attacks To Be Aware Of

Cyber attacks are a serious threat all over the globe affecting businesses of all sizes and in all industries. With more and more business activities taking place virtually, cybercrime has been on the rise, which means that businesses need to take this threat very seriously in 2023. A successful cyber attack can harm a business in a number of ways, and many companies find it difficult or even impossible to fully recover. It is helpful to be aware of the most common cyber attacks and how to prevent them. This post will look at the main threats to be aware of.

Ransomware

One of the most common attacks in 2023 is ransomware. This involves attackers holding sensitive data hostage by encrypting it and asking the holder for a ransom (usually money). There is no guarantee that the attacker will release the data, even if you pay the money. You can protect yourself against ransomware with anti-malware software, but you should also make sure that you back up data externally so that another version is always available.

Malware

There are many different types of attacks that fall under the malware umbrella, including viruses, spyware, and ransomware. Essentially, malware is malicious software that can cause damage to your computer system or access data and usually occurs through downloads and malicious websites. Using high-quality anti-malware software is key to this, but you also need to ensure that you and your team know how to avoid these attacks.

Phishing

Phishing attacks are hugely common and becoming harder to detect. This form of social engineering involves an attacker tricking a user into downloading malicious content or sharing sensitive information by posing as a trusted source. Again, having high-quality anti-malware software is important, but you also need to ensure you and your team have training in spotting these scams.

Cloud Cyber Attacks

Cloud cyber attacks are becoming more common, with so many businesses now operating in the cloud. While the cloud is generally more secure than traditional systems, you will find that attackers are focusing their efforts here as cloud computing plays such a big role in modern business. Therefore, cloud security needs to be a priority for any company using a cloud infrastructure, including cloud infrastructure entitlement management (CIEM). What is CIEM? This allows organizations to control who can access what resources on the cloud, which means that users can only access the data and resources they need for their role.

DDoS Attack

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack involves overwhelming a website, network, or server with unnamable levels of traffic or requests, which makes it unusable for users. A few ways to protect against a DDoS attack include firewalls, bandwidth scaling, and DDoS mitigation services. It is also intelligent to have a response plan in case your business is attacked.

These are currently a few of the most common types of cyber attacks that businesses face. It is important to be aware of these attacks and how you can protect your business, as a successful attack can be hard to recover from.
