7 Easy Ways to Bring Art Deco Style into Your Home

The roaring 20’s brought a lot of unique styles to this country. From the glamorous flapper girls to the luxurious lifestyle of the rich and famous.

Another thing this era brought to the US is the art deco style in interior design. The Empire State building is a great example of this style. Its most notable features include the geometric designs, bold colors, and metallics throughout.

Does this style inspire you? How can you incorporate this into your home? Try these seven easy ways that you can bring the art deco style into your house.

1. Use Geometrical ShapesMuch of the art deco style was brought into the country by the industrial revolution. Architecture, railways, and production improvements made linear and geometrical shapes popular.

You can use that same inspiration to decorate your home. Choose furniture with fluid lines, sharp angles, and above all else, make them symmetrical.

Look for ways to add geometrical design into the details of your home. Lighting fixtures, door handles, and picture frames are all opportunities to add art deco style to your home.

Circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares are a good start. Fans, sunbursts, arches and trapezoids are even better.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Go BoldBright and deep colors are a staple of the art deco style. These bold colors are paired with high contrast colors to make the effect even more eye-catching.

Painting your favorite piece of furniture with a deep jewel tone and adding black and white accents will embody the art deco style perfectly.

If you opt to paint the walls in a room a vibrant color, choose more neutral colors for your furniture. You can take this one step further by painting your furniture with a patterned stencil like this.

3. Choose Luxurious FabricsDrapes, sofas, chairs, and bedding in the art deco style are chosen for luxury.

A good choice for your windows would be thick embroidered silk drapes that hang from the ceiling to the floor.

Choose a plush sofa and add plenty of super-soft accent pillows. A velvet side chair or lounger would fit nicely into this design.

You can even incorporate this design into your area rug.

4. Make Your Surfaces Shine
Matte doesn’t belong in art deco. When choosing hard surfaces, look for those that you can see your reflection in. Yes, this includes mirrors but there are many more than you can incorporate.

Think counters made of marble, furniture made from black laminate, and accents of copper, silver, and gold.

5. Symmetry is EssentialWe’ve touched on this in point #1, but it can’t be stressed enough. Art deco mimics the streamlines of architecture. Symmetry is pleasing to the eye, especially when you are using angles and arches.

When placing furniture in your rooms, be sure to keep the pieces even. If you place a side table on one side of the couch, add a table on the other side.

Perfect symmetry is one of the most prominent elements to art deco style. This is used in the placement of everything from the large furniture to the wall décor.

6. Add the Occasional Sculpture Sleek sculptures of graceful human or animal bodies made from metallic material strategically placed to catch the eye will help to transform your space into the art deco world.

7. Install Moldings to Everything
Sticking with the architectural theme, art deco style in the home can take a bit more than just painting the walls or buying new furniture.

To really transform your home, you need to make some updates to your home. If you have the standard window and door frames, you can make a big impact by investing in the installation of ornate moldings.

Take things one step further and paint these moldings black or charcoal and you’ll see a big improvement in your home.

Conclusion
These seven decorating ideas can help you achieve the art deco look in your home. Of course, you can take a more modern approach to art deco by keeping the additions subtle.

But if you love the look, take it the whole nine yards. You’ll feel like you walked into the set of the Great Gatsby!
