10 Typical Mistakes in Writing a Marketing Plan

Nobody is perfect, and we all make mistakes from time to time. Thus, students who try to compose a marketing plan may face multiple impediments. This assignment surely differs from essay writing but also has some things in common. One of such is to make certain mistakes, which can be seen in different pieces of writing. We propose to find out 10 typical mistakes in writing a marketing plan.
However, we’d like to begin with a definition. A marketing plan is an operational document, which describes an advertising campaign a company is going to implement to promote itself in the market.

Commonly, this plan includes the next 12 months while the company will be trying to reach its targeted audience. It covers costs, objectives, action steps, etc

Unclear Campaign Objectives

One of the first mistakes may be the most crucial. A marketing plan simply lacks objectives. They may be present in some blurred form. However, marketing and business planning always set strict demands. Everything must be smooth, logical, and plain to understand.

Not Using Social Media

Many marketers seem to forget about social media. Currently, it’s possibly the most powerful tool for reaching the targeted audience. The news spreads really fast through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. However, many plan makers ignore social media and don’t include the plan. Thus, they lose thousands or even millions of potential customers.

Lack of Customer Research

Some students, as well as certified marketers, don’t make appropriate customer research. This is a huge mistake because an analysis of potential buyers is very important. If you don’t figure out who may be interested in your proposal, you won’t be able to find those people.

Imitating Competitors

At times, marketers and students are quite lazy or lack imagination. They cannot generate some new innovative ideas concerning the creation and promotion of certain products or services. Consequently, they simply imitate their competitors. One may say that they simply steal somebody’s ideas. Even if you perfectly rewrite the propositions of the competitors and disguise that, the main principles will remain the same. Accordingly, only a few people would be interested in your proposal because it’s not new.

Not Testing and Analyzing

Some folks think that the creation and launching of certain products/services are enough. Nonetheless, it’s not the end of the road. One should test and analyze campaign performances. Testing must be conducted even before the campaign starts. A marketer should define:

  • How people react to a new product/service;
  • How to reach the targeted audience;
  • How much would it cost;
  • Effective methods to reach the maximum impact;
  • Preventive measures to avoid errors, etc.

Adequate analysis focuses on customers. It tries to identify how people respond to the operations of the market and how to engage them.

Involving a Too Broad Audience

Another typical mistake is to aim at too many consumers at once. Marketers try to involve as many people as they can. However, the quality of your message lessens as you try to reach that objective. It’s all because of demographics. People from remote regions may not need your product. Therefore, focus on a certain region for the starter.

Not Using Repeat Customers

Oftentimes, businessmen focus only on new customers. They actually lose a lot, not even knowing about that. Repeat customers bring more income, and it has been proved. Marketing to previous customers runs faster and allows for earning more because such customers are already aware of your products/services. They have used them once and are content with them. Accordingly, they are waiting for new offers. Use direct emails to reach the repeat customers and tell about new projects.

Evaluating the Market Too Optimistically

Many marketers measure the market overly optimistically. It’s good to have a positive attitude. Nevertheless, it’s bad to overrate the chances. Such marketers promise a big and quick revenue, don’t mention some impediments, have no plans for sudden problems, etc. Commonly, such plans are rejected due to the lack of realism.

Repeating Yourself

Never repeat yourself! Many writers cannot express their ideas with new appealing words and so, use the same words. Therefore, their texts are worthless.

Hoping to Reach Too Many Objectives

Never try to reach multiple objectives at once. Your campaign may be fully ruined because of this desire. Reach goals and develop your campaign step by step.

These were the most typical mistakes made by students and even professional marketers. Remember these mistakes for good and don’t forget to avoid them. Besides, you may use the assistance of professionals to compose a perfect plan.
